I’ve been successfully growing microgreens as a commercial grower for over 2.5 years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that knowledge should be shared, not hoarded. I don’t believe in keeping secrets when it comes to growing your own food—especially something as nutrient-packed, simple, and rewarding as microgreens.
Whether you want to add freshness to your meals, boost your nutrition, or enjoy homegrown greens year-round, I want to show you exactly how to do it. And the best part? It’s easier than you think!
Why Grow Microgreens?
Microgreens are one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can grow at home. They’re packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants—sometimes containing up to 40 times the nutrients of their fully-grown counterparts! Plus, they’re fast-growing, require minimal space, and can be harvested in as little as 7-14 days.
If you're new to growing, I always recommend starting with the easiest microgreens to grow. These are foolproof, grow quickly, and taste amazing:
✅ Radish Microgreens – Fast-growing with a spicy kick
✅ Broccoli Microgreens – Mild flavor and packed with sulforaphane
✅ Brassica Blend Microgreens – A nutritious mix of broccoli, kale, and other brassicas
✅ Pea Shoots – Sweet, crunchy, and loaded with plant protein
What You Need to Get Started
To successfully grow microgreens, you only need a few basic supplies:
1. High-Quality Seeds
The foundation of great microgreens starts with high-quality seeds. I only use and recommend Mumms Organic Sprouting Seeds because they’re:
✅ Certified organic
✅ Non-GMO
✅ Tested for high germination rates
2. Growing Trays & Medium
You'll need shallow trays—one with holes and one without holes—to allow proper drainage. I prefer using organic coconut coir or soil as my growing medium, but hemp mats work well too.
3. Proper Lighting
Microgreens need indirect sunlight or a simple LED grow light if you're growing indoors.
Essential Tools for Growing Microgreens Successfully
To make the process even easier, I highly recommend using the right tools. These small investments will make a big difference in seed distribution, harvesting, and watering.
🔹 Dredger for Even Seed Distribution – Ensures an even layer of seeds across your tray, preventing overcrowding.
🔹 Digital Scale – Helps measure the exact seed amount for consistent and healthy growth.
🔹 Water Pump Mister – A gentle watering method to avoid washing away delicate seeds.
🔹 Microgreen Harvesting Knife – Makes harvesting fast, clean, and easy, preventing damage to your greens.
With these simple tools, you’ll get better germination, stronger growth, and cleaner harvesting every time!
My Step-by-Step Growing Method
1️⃣ Soak (if needed) – Some seeds, like pea shoots, benefit from an overnight soak to speed up germination.
2️⃣ Spread Evenly – Use a seed dredger to scatter your seeds evenly over the growing medium.
3️⃣ Press & Cover – Gently press the seeds down and cover them with another tray to create a blackout period. This encourages strong root development.
4️⃣ Water Daily – Lightly mist your microgreens once or twice a day with a water pump mister to keep them moist.
5️⃣ Uncover & Grow – After 3-4 days, remove the cover and expose them to light.
6️⃣ Harvest & Enjoy! – In about 7-10 days, use a microgreen harvesting knife to cleanly cut and enjoy your fresh greens!
